Being an HSP may not always be easy, and there are days when you might wish you were not so sensitive. However, it is important to keep in mind that our high sensitivity also confers many benefits upon us. For instance, I treasure my gift of reading a person or and environment almost instantly. Without a word being spoken I am able to accurately sense someones mood and respond accordingly. I am also pretty good at telling if someone is being honest with me, it appears that this ability even extends to emails! If someone writes me an dishonest email I can 'read between the lines' easily. It is almost like having a superpower of sorts!
As Dr. Elaine Aron is fond of saying, we HSP's do not relish tooting our own horns. However, I don't see anything wrong with being proud of our unique HSP gifts, and using them for the benefit of ourselves and others. Sometimes non-HSPs simply don't 'get' us, and may even brush us off as eccentric or just pain nuts! In such situations I just smile, and say a silent prayer of gratitude for being born with such a tremendous gift. In fact, I mentally turn the tables, and see the non-HSP through the lens of compassion. If only they could see the world for a moment with the delightful sensitivity we possess. Indeed, if there were a pair of magic-glasses that could instantly make the wearer see through highly sensitive eyes, I'll wager that they would choose to keep the magic- glasses on forever!
So savor and celebrate your HSPness, accept that even though you may be a minority amongst humanity, you are a majority when it comes to feeling all the nuances of life ever so deeply. Now that is a gift I wouldn't trade for anything in the world!
